BEXIMCO to launch RealVU DTH service

BEXIMCO Communications Limited, a joint venture between Beximco Group and Russian GS Group, on Thursday announced to launch the country’s first Direct-to-Home television service named RealVU.
DTH is a digital satellite television distribution service where consumers receive television signals directly from the satellite through a device installed in their home without existing cable-based system.
‘We are ready to provide DTH services under the brand name of RealVU by April-May at the consumer level that will drastically change the viewing experience of the Bangladeshi TV audience,’ said BEXIMCO Communications chief executive officer Dmitry Lapitskiy while speaking at the press conference held at a city hotel.
He said that the monthly bill for DTH service will be around Tk 300 but he did not reveal the price of the set-top-box required for enjoying the service.
He also said that in the beginning the subscribers can only use one set-top-box for one TV. ‘But we have plans to introduce sharing service in future,’ he said.
The government in December 2013 awarded two DTH licences to Beximco Communications Ltd and Buyers Media Ltd.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission in September 2015 issued the DTH guidelines where the regulator also did not specify the price of the home premises equipment for users.
As per the guidelines, DTH operators will have a lock-in period, the stipulated time when customers are obliged to use the service, which will not be more than 12 months.
The operators have to establish service centre at every district headquarters while distributors and the operators will also be bound to provide two years of repair and maintenance without any charge.
The BTRC is planning to change migration and refund policy in the guidelines.
According to the existing guidelines, if a customer wants to switch to another DTH operator, he/she has to buy the entire Customer Premises Equipment, or CPE from the new operator that contains set-top-box, cable, dish antenna, etc.
The BTRC is analysing if in the refund policy the CPE is replaced with set-top-box, then customers can keep the rest of the equipments while migrating to other operator.
