Dish TV launches Zing in Kerala

MUMBAI: Dish TV has launched its sub-
brand Zing in Kerala today for
Malayali viewers.
Zing will offer over 150 channels and
services including 16 Malayalam
channels at Rs 99 per month. At
higher packs, subscribers will get 27
Malayalam channels and services. Tata
Sky had earlier this year launched a
Rs 99 per month pack for the southern
states.
Dish TV said that the TV viewing needs
of Malayali people are strikingly
different from the needs of viewers in
the rest of India. To date, no other
DTH player has been able to cater to
these unique needs in a 360-degree
manner, being truly local, state
specific and even language specific.
TelevisionPost.com was the first to
report that after setting footprints
in seven states across India, Dish TV
was planning to launch Zing in Kerala
in August, before Onam.
Positioned to tap the regional-
language consumption market, Zing is
a customised service offering digital-
quality picture at cable price. Priced
at Rs 1,099, a new Zing connection
(set-top box) has the lowest entry
price, the company said.
Zing’s bouquet of services is based on
a consumer survey revealing the
most-watched channels in the region.
Says Dish TV India CEO RC Venkateish,
“Our consumer demographic study has
indicated that a large segment of TV
viewers from medium and small towns
prefer content from their own region.
Zing will address this need and provide
maximum available regional content
(27 Malayalam channels and services)
to viewers through exciting packs as
compared to other DTH brands. Zing is
our unique initiative where a complete
new brand is being launched to address
this need for regional content. Now
not only will the packages cater to
specific audiences across states, but
even communication will be in the
customer’s language of choice.”
To provide flexibility to consumers,
Zing would enable its trade partners
to address customer support issues at
the local level.
Incidentally, since it offers state-
specific local-language channels, Zing
maintains significantly lower content
cost than the mother brand Dish TV
and operates on higher margins
despite lower average revenue per
user (ARPU).
