Sun TV leads viewership charts across genres: BARC

MUMBAI: Sun TV is the most-watched
channel across genres in India. Sun TV
Network’s flagship Tamil general
entertainment channel doesn’t only
lead the Tamil GEC pie, but also
shadows the performance of Hindi GEC
leaders like Star Plus and Colors by a
large margin.
This is one of the revelations of the
BARC data for all India (urban+ rural)
for Week 41 (10–16 October).
Among the regional channels, there
were not many surprises across
markets. While Sun TV leads the Tamil
Nadu market, Andhra Pradesh/
Telangana saw ETV Telugu as the
leading channel. Karnataka witnessed
Colors Kannada consolidating its
leadership position, while Asianet
remained the dominant player in
Interestingly, the four southern
markets have leaders from four
different networks.
Similarly, in the Bangla market, Star
Jalsha continued to lead, while
Maharashtra’s regional leader is Zee
Here is a peek at the regional
channels as per their markets:

Tamil Nadu:

The biggest regional
market down south, Tamil Nadu saw
Sun TV Network’s GEC Sun TV and
movie channel KTV lead the respective
Star Vijay, Polimer and Jaya TV are
distant third, fourth and fifth players
in the market.
In fact, Sun TV’s viewership is almost
six times that of Star Vijay.

Andhra Pradesh/ Telangana :

Tamil Nadu, Sun TV Network does not
have a strong footing in this market.
Telugu, which is the second-largest
regional market, is led by ETV Telugu,
with Maa TV and Zee Telugu being
close No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.
The fourth and fifth places are
occupied by Sun TV Network’s Gemini
TV and Gemini Movies respectively.
Karnataka : The Kannada market has
been captured by Colors Kannada
(erstwhile ETV Kannada), which has
seen a steady growth from No. 4 to
No. 1 in the last two years.
Sun TV Network’s Udaya TV is the
second-most-watched channel in the
state, followed by Star India’s
Suvarna, Udaya Movies and Zee

Kerala :

Star India’s Asianet is a
strong leader of the Kerala market.
Its viewership is 4.8 times of the
second most-watched Malayalam
channel, Mazhavil Manorama, which is
owned by Kerala’s leading print group,
Malayalam Manorama.
Newly launched Flowers TV has become
No. 3 channel in the market, followed
by Sun TV Network’s Surya TV and
Asianet Movies.

West Bengal :

The largest non-south
regional market continues to be
dominated by Star India’s Star Jalsha,
with Zee Entertainment Enterprises
Ltd’s (ZEEL) Zee Bangla is in hot
Jalsha Movies is No. 3, while recently
rechristened Colors Bangla (earlier
ETV Bangla) and Zee Bangla movies
are at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.

Maharashtra :

Maharashtra is the
strongest market for ZEEL, with two
of its channels, Zee Marathi (GEC)
and Zee Talkies (movie channel), in
the top three.
Colors Marathi is at No. 2, while Star
Pravah and Maiboli are at No. 4 and 5

Bihar/ Jharkhand:

The heartland of
the Hindi-speaking markets (HSM) has
seen Dangal TV lead the charts in the
Bhojpuri entertainment genre, while
Big Magic Ganga is the distant second.
ETV Bihar Jharkhand, DD Bihar and
Anjan TV sum up the top five slots of
the Bhojpuri channels’ pecking order.


Sarthak TV (soon to be part of
ZEEL) is the leader in the TV
entertainment space in the state of
Odisha, followed by Tarang TV.
There is a huge gap between the top
two and the three remaining players,
which are Colors Oriya, Odisha TV and

    This Star Vijay which is nearly has 6 times lesser viewership than Sun TV, simply boasts too much and even gives awards to its own anchors and actors in the name of Vijay Awards and tries to create an impression as if it is the only channel for Tamil and people have to be blessed to have a chance in this channel.

    Sun TV is more humble compared to this Vijay TV.
