Tata Sky adds 10 new HD channels Posted on: 05/04/2016 12:21 AM TelevisionPost Team MUMBAI: Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky is adding 10 high-definition (HD) channels on its platform from Tuesday. The new channels are Romedy Now HD, Baby TV HD, Da Vinci HD, NGC People HD, Travel XP HD, Mazhavil Manorama HD, MTV Indies HD, VH1 HD, Nat Geo Music HD and Naaptol HD. Currently, the DTH operator provides 50 HD channels and services across genres. The new additions will take Tata Sky’s HD offering to 60. The DTH operator recently added more than 49 SD channels at one go to enrich its offering. Last year, Tata Sky had switched to MPEG-4 set-top boxes (STBs) from MPEG-2 to offer more channels. The switch to MPEG-4 was necessitated by the prolonged delay in getting additional transponder capacity from ISRO’s commercial arm Antrix, which is the nodal agency for buying transponder capacity. The DTH operator also hopes to get more capacity, thanks to GSAT-10 satellite, which has 12 Ku, 12 C-band and six lower C-band transponders. A senior Tata Sky official had told TelevisionPost.com last year that the DTH operator was going to acquire transponder space on GSAT 10 satellite for offering more HD channels, 4K and interactive services. “Tata Sky is chasing a new satellite [GSAT 10], which will give it space for more HD, 4K, interactive services and more viewing services like optional subtitles, which it does not offer right now,” a source familiar with the development had told TelevisionPost.com.
