Airtel Digital TV to source STBs from Hero Group- owned MyBox Technologies
MUMBAI: Direct-to-home (DTH) player
Airtel Digital TV will procure
indigenous set-top boxes (STBs) from
Hero Group-owned manufacturer
Mybox Technologies.
Mybox Tech, which was recently
acquired by the Hero Group and
became a subsidiary of Hero
Electronix, will be manufacturing
100,000–150,000 boxes per month
for Airtel Digital TV. Earlier, the DTH
company used to mainly import its
STBs.
“They have partnered us for the long
term and the STBs will be
manufactured at our Pune facility.
Every month, we are expecting to
make 100,000–150,000 STBs and
about one million boxes in a year,”
Mybox Technologies executive director
Amit Kharabanda told
TelevisionPost.com.
The STBs will be available in HD to
begin with and soon all STBs of Airtel
Digital TV will be manufactured in
India, making the DTH company the
latest to join the NDA government’s
‘Make in India’ initiative.
Bharti Airtel CEO of DTH/media Shashi
Arora said, “We are proud to partner
the government’s ‘Make in India’
initiative and launch indigenous set-
top boxes made in the country. With
this, we aim to reduce our imports and
thus help drive employment and
growth within the country. In the
long run, cost synergies will further
help us extend more benefits to our
customers. The launch also re-
establishes our leadership in offering
world-class TV viewing experience
with innovations such as these.”
Conceptualised and designed in India,
the HD STBs will be manufactured at a
state-of-the-art facility near Pune
(Ranjangaon).
The STBs are based on an in-house
design by MyBox Tech and ST
Microelectronics (a multinational
manufacturer of integrated devices
and semiconductors).
The indigenous Airtel Digital TV HD+
STB will offer the best features
including full HD 1080p support,
MPEG-4 video with Dolby Digital Plus
Surround Sound; 5X picture clarity;
unlimited recording (via USB drive);
and USB-based Wi-Fi connectivity for
on-demand, anytime TV and
interactive gaming.
On the initiative, Minister of State
for the Ministry of Information &
Broadcasting Col. Rajyavardhan
Rathore said, “It is great that Airtel
Digital TV is aligning itself with our
‘Make in India’ vision as this will
certainly pedal the fast gaining
momentum of the initiative further.
We wish the company the very best as
they step ahead towards transforming
the DTH industry in India with this
initiative.”
