News Reliance Jio extends preview data, voice offer to Samsung smartphone users

Reliance Jio extends preview data, voice offer to Samsung smartphone users
Under the offer, users of certain Samsung smartphones will get three months of free unlimited data and 4,500 minutes of voice calls, unlimited video calls, unlimited SMS, unlimited 4G data and Jio Premium apps for 90 days per 3 months.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has further extended its three-month unlimited data preview offer to existing Samsung smartphone users in India, a move could be aimed at rapidly increasing the Mukesh Ambani-led telco's subscriber base ahead of the commercial launch.

Though still unannounced, this could be the first such bundling deal between a handset vendor and Reliance Jio. Samsung is also the sole vendor for Reliance Jio's mobile network across the country.

Under the offer, users of certain Samsung smartphones will get three months of free unlimited data and 4,500 minutes of voice calls, unlimited video calls, unlimited SMS, unlimited 4G data and Jio Premium apps for 90 days per 3 months.

In order to avail the offer, a Samsung user can download the MyJio app and check for the offer, which will reflect basis on the location and city. The app will generate the offer code, which includes a bar code, which can be used to avail the SIM at a Reliance Digital or Xpress Mini Store nearby after submitting the identity, address proof and your photograph.

A User needs to dial 1977 to activate your Jio SIM through tele-verification, once he inserts the SIM in his Samsung smartphone.

Both Reliance Jio and Samsung didn't revert to ET queries on this bundling partnership.

Analysts believe that the latest move could be aimed at rapidly increasing the uptake of Jio connections, considering the deep penetration of Samsung smartphones in the country. "There will be good synergies given both Jio and Samsung have pan-India presence. Jio will get access to bigger user base due to the Samsung partnership. With this move, Jio may also want to ensure that its content services reach to maximum devices," said Tarun Pathak, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.

According to mobile news blog Techpp, the Jio offer is available for Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge Plus, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Note 5 / Note 5 Duos, Galaxy Note 4 Galaxy A8, Galaxy A5 2015 and A5 2016 and Galaxy A7 2015 and A7 2016.

ET in its July 14 edition reported that Jio is preparing for a commercial launch in August this year, and may launch its maiden plan, called Freedom, which may offer free voice services bundled with data, priced at least 25% lower than current offerings of top rivals.

Jio is currently offering services through this preview offer under the trial launch in the country, and has a customer base of around 7 lakh, according to industry estimates.

Last month, Jio began selling Lyf smartphones with SIM cards enabled for high-speed data services in bigger cities. Currently, any new Lyf smartphone buyer can avail the free Jio SIM card which comes with the three months preview offer.
