Breaking News :  Zee Media to venture into English news broadcasting
MUMBAI: Zee Media Corporation
Limited (ZMCL), which runs Hindi and
regional-language news channels, is
entering the English news
broadcasting space and has appointed
Rohit Gandhi as its editorial head.
Gandhi, who has worked in global news
outfits, joined ZMCL today as editor-
in-chief – English News Broadcast and
Related Content.
Gandhi will be heading the operations
of all initiatives in this space. He will
work closely with the business head
and revenue resources and report
directly to Punit Goenka. had earlier
reported that Zee was in talks with
CNN to launch an English-language
global news channel with an Indian
point of view. “We are in talks with
CNN. We are looking to have an all-
encompassing partnership with CNN,”
Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra
had said.
Ten days later, son Punit Goenka has
announced the appointment of Gandhi
as the editorial head. “Venturing into
the English news space allows us to
extend our presence in the overall
news genre across geographies and
even in the international arena. We
want to launch a news network for
global audiences with an Indian point
of view. With Rohit on-board to
spearhead this initiative, we are
confident that we will be able to
showcase a world-class product,” he
ZMCL has not announced the exact
date of launch of the channel. “We
are looking to launch the channel in
the next fiscal,” Chandra had said in
an earlier interaction.
Gandhi comes with over 23 years of
experience across 40 countries. He
has managed the complete gamut of
the news business and won many
international awards including the
Edward R. Murrow, Dupont Award,
Emmy, Golden Cine Eagle, Gracie
Award and the Headliner Award.
“It is a phenomenal opportunity for
me to work with Zee and Punit to
deliver world-class coverage to
viewers at home. We want to continue
on the path of providing in-depth,
textured coverage across platforms to
address the ever-changing needs of
the global audiences,” Gandhi said.
Prior to ZMCL, Gandhi was with South
Asian International as news
international correspondent and
communication strategist. He has also
worked with CBC, CNN, BCTV & Global
TV, Canada, and NDTV.
He has covered many war zones
including Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq
in 2003. He has also worked on
various international field projects in
the areas of international relations,
politics, socio-economic
empowerment, human rights,
environment, civil rights and social
action and highly sensitive terror
investigation, amongst others.
In 2006, Gandhi won the DuPont Award
given by Columbia University for
coverage of tsunami in South Asia for
CNN. In 2008 American Women in Radio
And Television awarded him with
Gracie Award for ‘Who Cares About
The Girls’ on National Geographic
Television. In the same year, he also
won Edward R. Murrow Award for
‘Child Brides-Stolen Lives’.
Gandhi’s documentary ‘Afghan
Warrior’, which was aired on National
Geographic, won the Emmy Award and
Golden Cine Eagle in 2010.
A Bachelor of Arts (BA) Hons in
Sociology and Anthropology from Delhi
University and Masters in
Communication and Media Studies from
Pune University, he also holds a
Masters in Broadcast Journalism from
Carleton University, Canada.
ZMCL runs two Hindi and eight
regional news channels. The company
also owns English newspaper DNA.
