Arasu gets no DAS licence yet as Govt debates over state-owned cable TV outfits
#1
NEW DELHI: Arasu Cable TV Corp. Ltd, a state government-owned cable television distribution network, has so far failed to get a licence from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to run the network.

Ministry sources told indiantelevision.com that licences have not been issued to any state-owned organisation for running cable TV networks as recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). The broadcast sector regulator had recommended that neither state-owned, local bodies nor religious organisations should be permitted to own TV channels.

Had Arasu not entered chennai market chennai would have been the first city in the nation to get digitalised as already there was STB in chennai several years back and its much easier than as any other city which never had one,

SCV wanted 300 rs for all channels and 1000 RS for STB.

Jak wanted 150 rs for all channels and free STB.

Right TV was also ready to promote.

Crystal cable network also says they were already ready but are ready even now to digital any number before dec end if allowed.

Yes, not all can give the same exact list of channels, but atleast chennai people would have got pay channels by now.

All because of this MSO's everything got spoiled, Arasu wanted TRAI to extend from July to Oct, TRAI did, now they wanted Dec again TRAI ready to do but cant trust Arasu this time so they want a written statement, but Arasu delayed almost several weeks to give this assurance.

Now it seems TRAI doesnt want to give licence to Arasu cause it fears that when Arasu enters chennai all MSO will be chased and only Arasu will remain, and all the given 11 MSO licence will have no meaning and if that happens Arasu will become SCV like a monopoly and will cut off any channels it doesn't like (Pro Govt) same way SCV did with Puthiya Thalaimurai.

Poor chennai people, they got caught with this and now seems no digital anywhere in near future.

Arasus intention seems to be good but doesnt seem to work, all they have to do is increase the 70 Rs tariff to 100 and 150/200 for all Pay channels, so the rest of the money can be used to give free STB to all 40 lakh chennai subscribers. Within a week all people will apply for it.

But arasu says 500 rs for each STB as advance and only god can find the final price then who will be ready to pay, dont know if they wantedly doing this to chase a good number to DTH which has already partially happened.

You both are correct, Arasu to satisfy their personal vengeance they are doing like this. Don't they know Chennai needs Digital stbs when they started here? Even if we assume they don't know, still CAS was in place since 2003 so they anyhow need Digital stbs to show pay channels. Others cannot suffer just because Arasu has to start a business. They can enter the market when they buy those stbs and till then they had to sit and watch others. The case deserves to be dismissed with costs.

More over Cable operators don't want some rupees and they are asking the MSOs to increase their share and may be Rs.100 might also be increased.

Instead of paying Rs.500 as advance and still not knowing what will happen and how much more we may need to pay and also to live at the mercy of cable operators, we can better switch to DTH of our choice.

There is no guarantee of our liked channels coming on both Cable and DTH which already SCV proved by putting Puthiya Thalaimurai at in frequency which is not received well by most.
