IPL to float tender for two new teams
#1
MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League
(IPL) is all set to become a 10-team
affair. The IPL Governing Council at
its meeting in Kolkata on Thursday
decided to float tender for two new
teams to maintain the eight team
equilibrium for the next two seasons
in the wake of Justice RM Lodha
committee’s decision to suspend
Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai
Super Kings (CSK).
With the Madras High Court refusing
to grant interim relief to CSK against
the two-year suspension order, the
BCCI had to take this decision. This
will mean that after the suspension
period of CSK and RR, the IPL will
have 10 teams from 2018.
The tenders are likely to be floated
after the BCCI’s Annual General
Meeting (AGM) next month.
The four-member IPL Working Group
put forth two suggestions before the
Governing Council members. The first
option is to float tender for two new
IPL teams for two years to fill in the
void left by the suspended teams of
CSK and RR.
The second option is to invite tender
for two new teams for 10 years. This,
in effect, will mean 10 teams come
into play after CSK and RR return to
the league.
The BCCI Working Committee, which
will meet today, will take a final call
on the IPL GC’s recommendations.
“We’ve decided that floating tenders
for two new franchises are the best
option. The IPL would be a 10-team
event when the two banned franchises
return from suspension in 2018. We’ve
decided this to honour the Lodha
committee verdict. We’ve decided this
to clean-up cricket and bring back
transparency. The final decision rests
with the Working Committee,” The
Indian Express quotes an IPL GC
member as saying.
